    In May of 1907, Johann Konrad (this is when his spelling became Conrad) filed his intention to become naturalized in the USA. His birth date is wrong on this document and this indicates that came from Canada to the USA on the Canadian Pacific Railroad. The petition for naturalization has his correct birth date but says the railroad was the Soo Line.

    According to an interview with Elizabeth Luft (see in documents), who was seven years old when the family left Russia, they rode a train to Hamburg, Germany, where they boarded a boat to Liverpool, then to Nova Scotia. 
    • The name of the ship was the SS Laurentian (nicknamed the Roly Poly because it wasn't very stable on the seas).

    This is a picture of the ship that the Luft family sailed on when they left Europe. They apparently took a train to England then boarded the SS Laurentian for Halifax, Nova Scotia in Liverpool, England on March 2, 1899, arrivng in Halifax on March 13, 1899. This ship was purported to be rather unstable and even Johann Conrad Luft, who was in the Russian Navy for seven years got sick.
